This weekend is the busiest weekend of the year for fire crews across the country, with Halloween tomorrow night.

Four units of the Dublin Fire Brigade, backed up by Gardaí, had to put out a huge bonfire in Dublin’s south inner city last night, with reports of stones being thrown at them.

Dublin City Fire Brigade is expecting up to 700 calls tomorrow night and is warning people to be careful around bonfires and with fireworks.

Crews from Dublin were back at Basin Street flats this morning, as the flames and heat from the bonfire was threatening the Luas lines.

Some locals on the scene said it was the biggest bonfire they had ever seen, while others denied anything was thrown at the Fire Brigade.

District Fire Officer from Tara Street Station, David Kavanagh, is warning people to be careful around bonfires and with illegal fireworks.

“In the Fire Brigade I suppose we get to see the dark side of Halloween, which I don’t mean the ghosts and the goblins, I mean the horrendous things that happen individuals,” Mr Kavanagh said.

“Normally young people that get badly burnt or maybe because they are dealing with illegal fireworks, that blow up in their hands and they lose fingers, some lose limbs.”
