A new era for Gorey Town Park and the adjacent Showgrounds dawned last Saturday with the official opening of a new state-of-the-art walking track and a call for the people of Gorey to take full advantage of the facilities and a promise of a family friendly and a safe environment for all who use them.

However, Gorey Municipal District Council is investigating the possibility of selling naming rights to the walkway, similar to a successful sponsorship scheme for the roundabouts in the Gorey area.

It is also likely that benches in the park will be used to commemorate people from the town who were instrumental in leading the way to progress the idea of a town park.

Gorey Showgrounds, with almost 10 acres and located at the back of the Town Park, was purchased by Wexford County Council in 2008.

Cllr Byrne was back on site to cut the ribbon and officially open the new one-kilometre walking track around the playing pitches.

The Showgrounds area is linked to the Town Park, which has been has been refreshed and new playground equipment has been installed.

Cllr Byrne said it was a great honour for him to unveil the new facilities, recalled playing there as a kid, and urged people to use the facilities because that is why they are provided.
