There has been out-pouring of sadness around Wexford town after the news broke that a badly decomposed body of an 84-year-old woman was discovered at a house in The Faythe.
The woman who is originally from Foulksmills, New Ross, has been named as Bridget Crosbie.
Her body was found by gardaí at her home in Wexford town at around 9.30pm on Friday night.
It is believed that Ms Crosbie led a reclusive life and relatives were prompted to contact Wexford Garda Station after a number of months passed by without telephone contact from her.
The body was transferred to University Hospital Waterford where a post mortem examination is due to be carried out early next week.
Gardaí say the result of the post mortem will determine the course of their investigation. However, foul play is not suspected.
Wexford Mayor Ger Carthy has extended his sympathies to the family.
“It’s devastating and very unfortunate that we find ourselves in this situation once again,” said Cllr Carthy.
In June 2012 the body of 62-year-old Alan Moore was discovered at his home on School Street, almost three months after he died from a heart attack.
Cllr Carthy added: “I suppose it is, in one way, a sign of the type of society that we live in, but you can’t blame the people of the town in this case because she chose to lead a reclusive life.”
