New beds have opened in Dublin in a bid to provide shelter for some of the city's homeless people.

Bru Aimsir on Thomas Street has space for 100 rough sleepers.

Recently released figures show more than 1,400 children are in emergency accommodation across Ireland.

Thomas, who has nowhere to live and spends most nights at the Merchants Quay shelter, said: "I was sleeping out, because I wasn't up to the system. I didn’t get much schooling.

"I keep away from trouble; I don’t like trouble. I jump on buses, killing time. Once I'm inside this dorm, I'm very happy."
