INVESTIGATIONS ARE ongoing into the discovery of over €357,000 worth of smuggled cigarettes at Rosslare Europort at the weekend.

The load, which arrived from Cherbourg in a Lithuanian registered truck, was identified as suspicious in routine profiling by Revenue. The truck was stopped and searched shortly before midnight on Saturday night.

The scanner was deployed and the contraband was discovered hidden in a number of hot tubs. The cigarettes were branded ‘Minsk Superslip’, ‘Minsk Short’ and ‘NZ Gold Superslip’.

The truck was seized and the driver, a man in his 20s, was questioned and later released.

This seizure is part of Revenue’s ongoing operations targeting the supply and sale of illegal cigarettes. If businesses or members of the public have any information regarding the smuggling or sale of illegal cigarettes or tobacco, they can contact Revenue in confidence on free phone number 1800 295 295.
