HOME AND business owners in Enniscorthy have been left devastated today following the worst floods in recent memory. Large parts of the town flooded late on Tuesday night and as many people attempted to go to work in the town on Wednesday morning, they found large parts of the town completely cut off.

Templeshannon and Abbey Quay were both completely submerged and cars could be seen trapped in the flood near The Riverside Park Hotel, where the underground car park was completely flooded as the river had risen right to the door. Homes at Island Road were also severely affected as the Slaney burst its banks.

It was virtually impossible to get from the Templeshannon side of town to the other side of the river as roads were flooded right along the river at Kilurin and Edermine. Stunned onlookers gathered at the bottom of Templeshannon Hill as the waters raged on and many phoned relatives and friends to make sure that they were okay.

People are being advised not to make any unnecessary journeys and if they are travelling to do so with extreme caution as many roads across county Wexford are badly flooded.

While the long awaited construction of the flood relief scheme in Enniscorthy is due to get underway towards the end of 2016, many business owners in the town will feel angry that the plans are not further along as they count the cost of the worst floods to hit Enniscorthy in years.
