There is a call for a greater emphasis to be placed on physical education in primary schools.

The Irish Primary Principals Network has said the current one hour per week is totally inadequate.

The Head Teachers' annual conference is taking place today and they want ensure that children's physical and emotional well-being becomes a priority in primary schools

Maria Doyle is President of the Irish Primary Principals Network: “They feel quite strongly and our membership comprises of 6,000 principals and primary principals in Ireland that there needs to be more time directed to PE and SPHE.

“The areas that directly impact on children’s well-being both physically and emotionally.”
