Sexual consent classes are being introduced at Trinity College Dublin.

The classes, the first in an Irish university, will be part of orientation for first-year students living in university-run accommodation.

The move is part of a bid to reduce the number of assaults on campus. A student survey last year found one in four female students at Trinity College who responded had a non-consensual sexual experience.

Similar classes are now compulsory for first-year students in England's Oxford and Cambridge universities.

One of the college's male students said: "It's a fine line between yes and no. You know when you're on a night out and you're absolutely twatted, you wouldn’t know what would happen, so I suppose a bit of clarity (is a good thing)."

A female student added: "I think when drink comes into it, the lines are blurred sometimes."

Another said: "I think it's a really good idea. It's the kind of thing young girls might not know about, a lot."
