A woman has been arrested at Dublin Airport on suspicion of swallowing more than €100,000 worth of cocaine.

Revenue officials said the 44 year-old, from Guyana in South America, was stopped as part of an “intelligence-led” operation involving the gardaí.

She is suspected of having swallowed 100 pellets of cocaine found in her system - around 1.7 kilos of the drug.

It is believed the drugs would have a street value in Ireland of almost €120,000.

The woman has been in custody since being stopped and arrested by gardaí on Tuesday.

She is being questioned at Ballymun Garda station under section two of the Criminal Justice (Drug Trafficking) Act, according to a Revenue spokeswoman.

“Investigations are continuing,” she added.
