Storm Henry will make landfall later today.
A Status Orange weather warning has come into effect from 10pm last night in counties Donegal, Galway, Leitrim, Mayo, Sligo, Clare, Cork, Kerry and Limerick.
Strong winds of between 110km/h to 130km/h are expected.
Forecaster with Met Éireann Harm Luijkx says Henry will be similar to recent storms.
There is also a Status Yellow wind Warning for Leinster, Cavan, Monaghan, Roscommon, Tipperary and Waterford with gusts of between 90km/h and 110 km/h forecast.
He said: "Gradually it will become windier as the day goes on and the peak of the storm will be in the afternoon, early evening.
"Then it will slowly decrease again on the night, and then on Tuesday it will be just a breezy day until the storm is gone."
