Students at six campuses around the country are taking part in "Shag Week".

The annual sexual health drive is being organised by the Union of Students in Ireland.

Students are being urged to get themselves tested for Sexually Transmitted Infections.

It is taking place on campuses in Galway, Dundalk, Carlow and Dublin.

The USI's deputy president, Annie Hoey, says promoting consent is another key message of the week.

She said: "Obviously in an ideal world we would teach consent at a much younger age. In Sweden they teach consent and boundaries from the age of five and upwards.

"So we'd like to see it being introduced in secondary education so that it won't be necessary in third level, but right now I think it is quite clear that it is necessary."

The USI's deputy president also says getting tested for STIs is vital for people who are sexually active.

She said: "We're really encouraging people to go out and get tested. For example, HIV Ireland is offering free testing at their office in Eccle Street on Wednesdays from 1.30pm to 3.30pm.

"If you go onto shag.usi.ie, there is lots of information around where your local STI clinic is."
