WEXFORD’S NEWEST theatre group, Raven Theatre will be back on the Arts Centre stage later this month with a production of Jez Butterworth’s haunting play ‘The River’.

The play will be staged at 8 p.m. on February 18, 19 and 20.

‘The River’ is the latest play by Award Winning playwright Jez Butterworth (‘Jerusalem’, ‘Mojo’) and was performed on the West End and Broadway in 2012 and 2014, starring Dominic West and Hugh Jackman respectively.

Described by critics as “endlessly mysterious”, ‘The River’ focuses on a nameless male character who has brought his new girlfriend to his woodland cabin for a romantic weekend. The play explores the effect that past relationships can have on the present. It is a reflection on love and truth, on possession and violence, set as a hauntingly poetic piece which will entice audiences.

Raven’s production features an all-star cast of local talent, with Lee Kelly in the lead role while Lauren Corish Wallace and Jessica Walker portray the two strong female characters.

The play is directed by Anna Hayes, who made her directorial debut in Summer 2014 and has since directed a self-penned piece during the 2015 Wexford Opera Festival. This is her first full-length play and she is assisted by Eoghan Rua Finn.

Raven Theatre was founded in April of last year and ‘The River’ is its third full-length offering. The group was last on stage during the Opera Festival when it produced four new short plays by local writers. For more information, log on to the group’s Facebook or Twitter page for updates.

Tickets for ‘The River’ are on sale now from Wexford Arts Centre on 053 91 23764 or www.wexfordartscentre.ie. Due to some themes, the play is not suitable for younger audiences.
