Revenue officers have seized nearly 23,000 cigarettes after stopping and searching a car in County Tipperary.

The contraband cigarettes were found in Golden, County Tipperary yesterday morning.

The officers followed up with a search, under warrant, of the driver's residence where they found more illicit cigarettes and tobacco.

A total of 22,800 cigarettes, branded 'Royal Classic', 'Jim', 'MG', 'NZ Gold', 'Che', 'Marlboro' and 'Monte Carlo' were seized along with 200 grams of tobacco, branded 'Amber Leaf' and 'Cherry Choice'.

The vehicle, in which a quantity of the contraband was discovered, was also seized.

The combined value of the seized tobacco is approximately €10,700, representing a potential loss to the Exchequer of €9,100.

A man in his 50s was questioned and a file is currently being prepared for the DPP.
