The President says we now have an unparalleled opportunity to give the voiceless the chance to be heard in our society.

Speaking on World Radio Day, President Higgins, a former Minister for Broadcasting, marked the contribution made by Irish broadcasters.

He said that the country's radio stations are an invaluable resource for empowering our citizens.

President Higgins said that our love for radio has spread globally.

"I think as well because of Ireland's connection with the developing world, anyone who has worked abroad could very quickly see how radio has transformed the lives of many people in remote areas in developing countries," he said.

"I think our national, local and community radio stations in both languages are invaluable resources for empowering people at home in Ireland and also abroad."
