It’s been a mixed day for Republic of Ireland fans, as emails from UEFA have been winging their way around the country this morning. They have been delivering word on whether or not applications for tickets to the European Championships have been successful.

Some people got good news - and congratulations to all who got lucky. Roll on France in June.

But for many others the news was heartbreaking.

And, as we suspected would be the case based on other fans’ experiences, there are a lot of very unhappy long-term supporters out there.

But all hope is not lost. The FAI have said that they are holding tickets in reserve.

They said in a statement: “These tickets will be used to satisfy the demand from supporters with a proven match attendance record, who have missed out on securing tickets through the UEFA Portal.”

The organisation were holding 2000 tickets and say they have been given an extra 832 by UEFA “following a letter from the Association to European football’s governing body, in anticipation of an expected shortfall for supporters”.

Let’s hope there are enough to satisfy the many loyal supporters who have missed out.

Update at 5pm.

The FAI have reiterated that they will cater for their most loyal supporters.

In a statement this afternoon they said: "Applicants who received notifications from UEFA that they were unsuccessful and wish to be added to the official waiting list should forward their notification email from UEFA to [email protected] along with their FAI account number and details of the tickets that they applied for."
