A man has been taken to hospital by the Irish Coastguard helicopter following an accident off the shores of Newcastle in County Down.

The Dublin-based coast guard helicopter was dispatched to assist in the operation at around 5.30am this morning.

It is understood the crew member had received head injuries.

He has been airlifted to Daisy Hill hospital in Newry.
