A WOMAN is recovering from a terrifying ordeal which saw her held up at gunpoint in broad daylight in the Abbey Square car park on Tuesday morning of last week. Gardaí acted quickly on the matter and a man was arrested and a file is currently being prepared for the Director of Public Prosecutions.

The incident took place at around 9.30 a.m. last Tuesday morning when the woman, believed to be in her forties, was on her way to the Post Office. As she was passing Enniscorthy Cleaners, she was approached by a man and a woman, both believed to be foreign national, and had a gun put in her face. A demand was made for money but according to a Garda spokesman, “it was a very quick incident and they got nothing”.

It was later established that the pistol used was in fact an imitation firearm, however, the terrified woman had now way of knowing this was the case. Gardaí were immediately called and the woman was said to have been shaken by the incident, but was uninjured.

Due to the serious nature of the incident, Gardaí were quick to act and a man was arrested later that day in connection with the incident in an operation which once again saw the Garda armed-response unit involved – the second time they have been deployed in Enniscorthy in recent weeks following a number of raids tackling criminality in the area towards the beginning of January.

While Gardaí refused to comment on specifics relating to the case, it is believed that the man arrested is not an Irish native and that he was taken from his home in the Shannon to Enniscorthy Garda Station.

A Garda spokesman said that the investigation is still ongoing and a file is currently being prepared for the DPP.
