A Canadian hockey fan is facing charges of assault after making his displeasure with the referee felt at a recent game.

Forward Francis Perron was playing for the Rouyn-Noranda Huskies in a junior league game when the ref penalised him for roughing an opponent from Blainville-Boisbriand Armada.

Seconds later a beer can was thrown from the crowd and the official was hit square in a very sensitive area.

The referee was knocked to his knees with the force of the blow and Canadian police were informed about the incident.

Days later a man who had been watching from the stands was arrested and will face charges of assault later this year. Police wouldn't name the man but the Journal de Montreal identified him as Parron's older brother Alexandre.
