A young boy has drowned after falling into a river in County Kildare.

The 13-year-old and another boy and girl, fell into the Lyreen River beside the Kilcock Road in Maynooth, at around 4pm this afternoon.

One of the boys managed to get to land and raise the alarm, and all three were rushed to Our Lady's Hospital for Sick Children in Crumlin.

The teenager was pronounced dead at the hospital.
