Irish swimmer Gráinne Murphy has announced her retirement from the pool.

The 22-year-old Wexford native has decided to quit the sport after revealing that a severe lung infection that she suffered in November last year has severely hampered her preparations for the 2016 Olympics Games in Rio.

The former European silver medallist holds three senior Irish records, in the 800m and 1500m freestyle and the 200m individual medley.

Speaking on her retirement Murphy said she will “treasure” the memories from here short career.

“After thinking long and hard I have finally come to the decision to hang up my hat and goggles at International level,” said Murphy.

“I have had many amazing memories and experiences during my years as a high performance swimmer and I will treasure them for the rest of my life.

“Unfortunately tough times followed for me as most swimmers and sports people would understand. I reached a crossroads in November of 2015.

“I suffered a severe lung infection that took a long time to recover from. I realised that while I might make an Olympic Qualification time for Rio, I did not feel like I would be competitive at the Games.”

Murphy now plans to finish her studies in exercise and health fitness at the University of Limerick.
