The Tánaiste Joan Burton says local radio debates can be very trying for candidates.

It comes after Minister Ann Phelan stormed out of a debate with KCLR yesterday evening.

About 15 minutes before the end of the broadcast, the Minister of State with special responsibility for rural economic development told her fellow candidates she was "fed up with the whole bloody lot of ye", and promptly left the studio.

Ms Burton said radio debates can be testing.

She said: "I understand that in fact, Ann Phelan is having an interview on the same radio station, so obviously they must of all kissed and made up, and I'm sure we'll all look froward to hearing that.

"I have seen these people's debates and would say, at times, from the ones I've seen, they can be quite trying."
