A baby has been airlifted to hospital in a critical condition following a road traffic collision in Co Clare.

The baby, believed to be just three months old, was airlifted to hospital with her mother who was also seriously injured.

The two-car, head-on collision occurred at around 5pm on the main Ennis to Kilrush road at Glaun, Lissycasey.

There were two males along with the mother and baby in one car and just the driver, an elderly woman, traveling in the second vehicle.

The mother and infant were flown to University Hospital Limerick (UHL) while the other three casualties were taken to UHL by road ambulance.

The road was blocked by the collision and remains closed tonight until a technical examination can be carried out.

Gardaí are investigating the incident.
