Waterford and Donegal politicians Paudie Coffey and Frank McBrearty jnr both shared emotional tributes on Facebook following the news that they had not been re-elected after the count.

Former TD Paudie Coffey wrote an heartfelt message on his Facebook page, thanking people for voting for him in the election and his staff and campaigners.

The Waterford man lost out in the election but wrote that he was honoured to represent the Waterford Constituency in Dáil Eireann for the past five years.

Mr Coffey wrote: “Thanks to all of my loyal campaign team, staff, supporters and all of the 9,000+ voters who marked the ballot paper after my name.

To my wife Suzanne and family for their wonderful support and encouragement over the years.”

Another politician who took to Facebook had less grace in the face of defeat, writing a long and expletive filled rant after missing out on election.

Former mayor of Donegal Frank McBrearty jnr was eliminated on the forth count in Donegal on Saturday night and posted an angry message on the social media site, accusing the media of vilifying him and promising to quit politics once his term as councillor finished.

Mr McBrearty wrote: "“The next person in the media writes something wrong about me will be sued.

“I have had enough of people in the media that think they can write what they like about me.”

The publican also thanked his “true supporters” who voted for him.
