Frank Kelly has been remembered as loving, courageous and committed at his funeral.
President Higgins, Father Ted creator Graham Linehan and broadcaster Gay Byrne are among the hundreds of mourners to gather at the Church of the Guardian Angels in Blackrock in Dublin.
Personal mementoes brought to the altar included 17 flowers for each of his grandchildren, a Picture of the Forty Foot and the Irish Times Crossword, which he did every day.
Chief Celebrant Fr Bill Fortune said Frank Kelly had a particular type of courage: "Not hot-headed, not cold...(but) warm blooded courage, with which he was able to live and cope with Parkinsons, cancer, a failing heart, and all the activities and commitments that he was going through in life."
Mr Kelly was remembered as a family man, who prized education and loved practical jokes.
Frank Kelly's son Emmet said he is no doubt what will happen when he arrives at the "Pearly Gates": “When he gets to heaven, when they choose to leave Fr Jack through the Duty Free at the pearly gates,
“They will have no choice, it will be the first time anyone ever told St Peter to Feck off.”
