Sinn Féin TD Pearse Doherty says his party will take every opportunity to ensure the Longford-Westmeath count is accurate.

He believes their candidate Paul Hogan from Athlone is in a good position.

He's currently ahead of the James Bannon of Fine Gael and Willie Penrose of Labour, but it's believed if Bannon is eliminated, his transfers will elect Willie Penrose to the final seat.

Speaking to Shannonide Radio in Longford, Pearse Doherty says they are awaiting the final result.

"We will use every opportunity to make sure that the count is accurate.

"This battle at the minute in terms of recounts is going on between James Bannon and Willie Penrose.

"We're sitting comfortably, we're well ahead of them at this point in time, lets see who goes out first."
