A man has been airlifted to hospital after a pile of timber he was delivering fell on top of him.

The accident happened at around 2.20pm at a house near Gort in Co Galway.

It is understood the man in his 20s was making a delivery when he became trapped beneath a pallet timber.

A unit of the fire brigade from nearby Gort responded to the incident, along with local gardaí.

An ambulance and rapid response advanced paramedic unit were sent from Ennis in Co Clare.

After being assessed by paramedics, the Emergency Aeromedical Service air ambulance was requested to airlifted the injured man to hospital.

He was taken to University Hospital Galway where he is being treated for his injuries.

The Health and Safety Authority (HSA) confirmed the incident had been reported to it, and that it would be investigating.
