A new survey by Amnesty International, shows almost two-thirds of Irish people want the next government to expand access to abortion services.
The study also reveals that 80% strongly agree that a woman's health should be the priority in any legal reform.
While over half of people think that Ireland’s laws banning abortion are cruel and inhumane.
Executive Director of Amnesty in Ireland Colm O'Gorman, has said the next government should take the results of this survey as a clear message: “This is the most extensive research done, on public attitudes to abortion in Ireland to date
“It is very clear that there is consensus right across the country that we need significant progress in this area.
“The fact that today, people in Leinster House are sitting down trying to work out how they are going to bring about the next Government.
“Every single day 10-12 Irish women and girls will leave this country and take the journey to England and Wales, is something most people want to reverse.”
