Gardaí say that they will have adequate policing to combat the threat of dissident republican activity during the 1916 commemorations.

The statement comes after a prison officer suffered serious injuries in a bomb blast on Friday and a number of viable devices were uncovered in Antrim over the weekend.

All leave for gardaí in Dublin has been cancelled during the commemoration period.

Garda Commissioner Noirin O'Sullivan said that the activities of dissident republicans remain a top priority for gardaí.

"It shows that there is a very small, but nevertheless a very determined cohort of people who are determined to cause harm to communities north and south of the border," she said.

"Obviously, it's an ongoing, live investigation in Northern Ireland, we're working very closely with our colleagues in the PSNI, but it is why the activities of dissident republicans remain a top priority for An Garda Síochána."

The comments come ahead the funeral of Vincent Ryan tomorrow.

Ryan was shot dead in his car in Dublin last week in the city's latest gangland shooting.

There are fears of more violence around the funeral, but the Garda Commissioner said there is a policing plan in place.
