Update 4.15pm: Gardaí have appealed for information following the sudden and unexplained death of an 11-month-old baby boy at an apartment in Killarney, Co Kerry. The body of the baby boy was removed form his home this afternoon.

Gardai are particularly appealing to anyone who was in the vicinity of Park Place Apartments between 1pm-6pm yesterday evening to contact them.

Anyone with information is asked to contact Killarney Garda Station 064-6671160, the Garda Confidential Line 1800 666 111 or any Garda Station.

The assistant state pathologist, Dr Bolster, has carried out a preliminary examination at the scene.

An incident room has been established at Killarney Garda Station and a Garda Family Liaison Officer has been appointed in the case.

Members from the Garda Technical Bureau are continuing to examine the scene.

Update: 11.10am Garda technical experts from Dublin are due at the apartment of a couple in Killarney town centre, where the body of an 11-month-old baby boy was found yesterday evening.

The flat is that of a man in his 30s and his partner in her 20s, gardaí say.

It is understood the mother of the child has been in Killarney for some time and both worked in one of Killarney’s top hotels.

They are members of a large and well-established Polish community in Killarney.

Earlier: Gardaí are treating as suspicious the death of an 11-month-old baby boy in Kerry.

Shortly before 6pm yesterday evening emergency services were called to an apartment on Upper High Street, Killarney.

The baby boy received medical treatment at the scene, but was pronounced dead a short time later.

A man in his 30s is receiving medical treatment at University Hospital Kerry, Tralee.

Fiona Stack of Radio Kerry said: "It's understood that the alarm was raised by the child's mother when she returned from work and emergency services and Gardaí attended the scene and attempted to revive the 11-month-old baby boy.

"A man in his 30s with injuries believed to have been serious at the time was taken by ambulance to University Hospital Kerry in Tralee. We understand that man is in a stable condition this morning."

The baby’s body remains at the scene, which has been preserved for a forensic examination.

A preliminary examination has been carried out by Assistant State Pathologist Dr Margaret Bolster.

The baby’s death is being treated as suspicious and one line of inquiry is that it was a domestic incident.
