Gardaí are mounting a significant security operation in Dublin today for the funeral of Vinnie Ryan.
The prominent republican was murdered in a gangland-style assassination last week in Finglas.
Requiem Mass for Mr Ryan takes place at the Church of the Holy Trinity in Donaghmede this morning, with burial at Fingal cemetery.
There was controversy over a paramilitary display at the funeral of his brother, Real IRA leader Alan Ryan.
Justice Minister Frances Fitzgerald says gardaí have been in contact with the family ahead of the funeral.
“That obviously is a concern and the public, I believe, are appalled at those type of displays,” she said.
“An Garda Síochána will take every step possible to ensure that there is a dignified funeral.
“Certainly the public do not want to see that kind of display, sometimes it is quite difficult, but I believe the Garda Commissioner has been in contact with the family and they have expressed their wishes to her.”
An armed garda presence will be at the funeral – but they say they are not expecting a repeat of the gunfire that was seen at the funeral of Vinnie Ryan’s older brother Alan.
Shots were fired over Alan Ryan’s coffin by men in balaclavas.
Gardaí have been liaising with Mr Ryan’s family ahead of the funeral.
In a statement the family appealed for no retaliation for his murder.
They added that Vinnie Ryan was a staunch republican, but was not in the IRA when he was shot.
