THE FAMILY of a toddler, who passed away after an accident at his crèche in 2014, has called for more rigid inspections of cots in crèches during HSE spot checks.
Padraig and Elaine McMahon issued a brief statement at the conclusion of their son Fiachra’s inquest recently thanking all those who had supported them during such a difficult and heartbreaking time, and appealing to be left in peace to continue the grieving process.
They also called on the HSE to incorporate thorough inspections of cots at all crèches so that no other parents would have to experience what they did.
The inquest heard that 18-month-old Fiachra McMahon was at Wonderwise Creche in Castlebridge on December 9, 2014 when tragedy struck.
Coroner, Dr. Sean Nixon explained that the cot had been examined and it was found that there was no intentional misuse of the item. He said that while the modifications were not of top quality, they were not unreasonable. The accident had happened as a result of a loose bolt at the joint of the cot.
He recommended that the jury return a verdict of accidental death which they agreed with.
He expressed his deepest sympathies to the family, their friends and the crèche workers on what was a sad and tragic loss. He complimented them for their presence, saying: “It must be extremely difficult for you all to be here.”
Cllr. Fergie Kehoe, on behalf of the jury, echoed the sympathies of his colleague and also complimented the paramedics and hospital staff who had tried their best to help the child.
Insp. Pat McDonald expressed his sympathies to the family on their “unimaginable loss”.
