The latest housing report from the ESRI reveals we are not building nearly enough houses in the key areas of demand like Dublin.

In the past three years, house prices have risen by 30% in Dublin, Galway and Cork city - with the rest of the country averaging a 10% increase.

Perhaps unsurprisingly demand for housing remain greatest in Dublin and the commuter counties - and in our major cities like Cork and Galway .

The problem is most houses built between 2013 and 2015 were located outside of these regions.

We are currently only building 2500 houses a year in Dublin

- when just to stand still the ESRI say should be producing between 10,000 and 15,000.

They think this may be because of a lack of development sites, certain planning regulations and higher land costs in the capital

The ESRI is urging politicians to look at how to remove some of the blocks so supply can once again begin to meet demand.
