Gardaí are investigating reports that there were a number of people present in an apartment in Kerry where an 11-month-old baby died last Sunday.

The child's father, who also sustained injuries in the flat in Killarney at the time of the infant's death, died in hospital yesterday.

Detectives have said the results of the baby's post-mortem will direct the course of their investigation, but the findings are not being released to the public for operational reasons.

Marian O'Flaherty, reporter with Radio Kerry, has said officers are going to conduct a range of interviews: “Preliminary reports emerging Sunday night and early Monday morning, did indicate that there were also other people present in the apartment.

“This has been unconfirmed.

“These were very very early reports, but we believed on Monday through our own investigations that gardaí were hoping to speak to a number of people, in relation to that.

“So possibly, maybe there might be an answer to this yet.”
