Barry Geraghty had a tough day at the office today.

He was on board What's The Scoop in the 2.40 at Sandown and looked to have the race wrapped up as they pulled clear of the opposition after the final fence.

Unfortunately Geraghty’s mount, for reasons unknown, decided that he had had enough running in a straight line and veered wildly off to his left.

That left remaining horse Starvin Marvin cruising to victory despite, as the commentator put it: “virtually walking up the hill”.

“He jumped the last big and I knew he was having a look at the stands up the straight,” Geraghty said afterwards. “It is a daunting place and he was having a big look when he got to the front.

“When the rail ran out he just turned left - I still thought if I could pull him back on course five or six yards from the stands rail he would still win.

“He just panicked as well as being a big baby.”

And if you think Geraghty's gutted, just imagine the gamblers who had him backed. According to Betfair, there was more than £29,000 bet on What's The Scoop in-running.
