Second seed Andy Murray recorded his first ATP Tour win since becoming a father with a 6-4 7-6 (7/3) victory over Marcel Granollers in the BNP Paribas Open at Indian Wells.

After receiving a first-round bye, the Scot showed signs of rust before coming through to book a date with Argentina's Federico Delbonis in the third round.

Juan Martin del Potro was playing just his sixth match of the year but found the sixth-seeded Tomas Berdych too much as he crashed a 7-6 (7/4) 6-2 defeat.

American wildcard Frances Tiafoe had the crowd on their feet as he gave 15th seed David Goffin an almighty scare before Goffin won 3-6 6-3 7-6 (7/2).

Milos Raonic coasted past Inigo Cervantes 6-1 6-3 and Marin Cilic ended the hopes of American qualifier Ryan Harrison with a 6-4 6-3 win.

But it was not all plain sailing for the seeds with Australian Nick Kyrgios crashing out following a 7-6 (7/4) 7-5 reverse to Albert Ramos-Vinolas.

The fiery Australian was docked a point and warned for swearing by chair umpire Damien Dumusois.

Fellow seeds Pablo Xuevas, Jeremy Chardy, Joao Sousa and Viktor Troicki also bowed out.

In the women's event, Australian Open champion Angelique Kerber was stunned by Denisa Allertova as the second seed suffered a 7-5 7-5 defeat.

And America Christina McHale also sprung a surprise as she ousted the fourth seed Garbine Muguruza with a 7-5 6-1 triumph.

In the final game of the evening, Ana Ivanovic came through an epic battle with Italy's Camila Giorgi.

The Serbian 14th seed won one of the matches of the season 2-6 6-2 7-6 (7/4) in two hours and six minutes.

Chinese wildcard Shuai Zhang came from a set down to upset the 20th seed Caroline Wozniacki with a 4-6 7-6 (10/8) 7-5 triumph.

Eugenie Bouchard beat Sloane Stephens 7-5 7-5 and Swiss seventh seed Belinda Bencic came through a tricky clash with American wildcard Lauren Davis 6-3 3-6 6-3.

Johanna Konta also advanced with a 6-4 6-0 win over Madison Brengle, while seeds Anna Karolina Schmiedlova and Daria Gavrilova are also going home.
