Gardaí have appealed for witnesses after a man was killed after the car he was travelling in collided with a van carrying a five-year old girl and her father.

There are unconfirmed reports that, the car, in which the deceased and another man were travelling in, was driving on the wrong side of the road prior to the collision.

The fatal crash occurred on Hyde Road in Limerick city, at approximately 7.30pm.

"The occupants of the car, two males aged in their 20s, were removed by ambulance to University Hospital Limerick. One of the males has since been pronounced dead," a Garda Press Office statement said.

"The driver of the van (male 40s) and his passenger, a 5-year-old girl, were also taken to hospital with minor injures," Gardaí added.

Three units of the Limerick City and County Fire Service responded to the scene, along with Gardaí, and a HSE ambulance crew.

Hyde Road is currently closed to traffic between Lower Carey’s Road and Lenihan Avenue and diversions are in place.

Garda Forensic collision investigators have been requested to examine the scene.

"Anyone with information is asked to contact Roxboro Road Garda Station 061-214340 or the Garda Confidential Line 1800 666 111," Gardaí said.
