Heritage experts are to visit Skellig Michael island off the Kerry coast in the coming days to inspect “significant damage” caused to the world heritage site.
The OPW has said ancient walls on the island appear to have been swept away.
However, there are no reports of damage to ancient monastery on the island, which was used as a filming location for the latest Star Wars movie.
The inspectors will be asked to assess if the island can be made safe for visitors this summer.
