St Patrick's Day festivities have been taking place this afternoon across the country.

More than half a million people turned out to enjoy this year’s parade Dublin - and the dry, sunny weather certainly didn’t hurt numbers. Close to 3,000 performers participated in this year’s parade.

The festivities are being held to mark the feast day of our patron saint, with celebrations to go on through tonight.

Landmarks have been turning green across the world, while on the streets around the country faces are turning green and shamrock and leprechaun hats have been pulled out.

Disability rights activist Joanne O'Riordain is the youngest ever Grand Marshall of the Dublin Parade.

She said the irony of a Cork person leading the Dublin parade hasn't been lost on her.

"It's ironic, but it's so obvious a Cork person has to lead everything - it's the real capital, so I have to come up here and represent," she joked.

"I'm absolutely delighted. It's cross border relations right here."
