Galway hurlers have been dealt a big blow in their bid to avoid relegation from the top flight with All-Star Daithi Burke ruled out of Sunday’s trip to Waterford.

Daithi Burke in action against Tipperary last weekend.

The versatile 23-year old is unlikely to be fit for a relegation play-off if Galway end up in one after breaking one of his thumbs.

The Turloughmore clubman, who this time last year was celebrating an All-Ireland SFC club title win with Corofin, is set to be sidelined for several weeks.

Honoured as a wing-back on last season’s All-Star team, Burke lined out at full-back in last weekend’s exciting draw with Tipperary.

Manager Micheal Donoghue said they would have to plan without him for Sunday’s key clash with Waterford.

“Someone’s misfortune is another’s opportunity. We have a few more suffering injuries from the Tipp match, so we will wait and see.

“All we can do on Sunday is focus on getting our own job done and hopefully if we do that other results go our way,” said Donoghue.
