Christian Benteke got on the wrong side of Jurgen Klopp this afternoon.

The Belgian striker spurned a good chance to kill off the Southampton challenge, dragging his shot wide with the score at 2-1 in favour of the Reds.

Klopp wasn’t happy to see the shot go wide and, after seeing Southampton score a late leveller, and an even later winner, he saved some seemingly strong-worded criticism for Benteke.

When asked about the discussion after the game by the BBC, Klopp insisted it was just a few words of advice.

“Sometimes we have to talk with players, that's my job,” he said.

“They go to the national teams now and I don't want to make phone calls with all of them, so I had a few words, it's okay. Nothing else.”

Benteke has received plenty of constructive criticism since Klopp’s appointment at Anfield, with the German manager saying he believed that the ex-Aston Villa striker had turned a corner in recent weeks.

However it seems Benteke still has some way to go in the eyes of his boss.
