A senior Fine Gael acting Minister says everyone elected to the 32nd Dáil has a responsibly to contribute to the construction of a stable Government.

His comments come as negotiations to form a new Government continue.

The Dáil is due to sit again tomorrow, although it is understood that a Government will not be formed.

In the longer term, many expect a Fine Gael led minority government to be formed, although both Fine Gael and Fianna Fáil are continuing talks with independents.

Speaking to LMFM in Dundalk today, Simon Coveney said that the electorate does not want to return to the polls.

“People don’t want another election,” he said.

“Politicians don’t want it, but more importantly, the people who voted in the last election don’t want to be asked to vote again.

“I think that would be a failure of the political system, and I think everybody that has been elected to this Dáil has a responsibility to try and contribute towards the construction of a stable government that can build on the successes of the last five years and learn from the failures of the last five years.”
