ENNISCORTHY GARDAÍ are appealing for witnesses after a woman was pulled over and robbed at the side of the road by criminals posing as members of An Garda Síochána.
The woman, aged in her late twenties, was said to have been left shaken, but relatively unharmed following the incident which took place near Caim shortly after 9 p.m. on Saturday night.
During the course of the incident, the woman was driving in the Monart East/Caim area when she noticed a “dark coloured vehicle” travelling behind her. After the car activated flashing blue lights, she automatically assumed it to be the Gardaí and pulled over to the side of the road.
At this point, a man the woman said “looked like a Garda” approached the driver’s side window and proceeded to accuse her of minor road traffic infringements.
After this, Gardaí say the culprit robbed her of “a small amount of cash and some personal possessions” which included her mobile phone. It is believed that there was a physical element to the robbery, but the woman was left without serious injuries.
A spokesman for Enniscorthy Gardaí said that they are treating the incident seriously and are appealing for any members of the public who may have seen anything suspicious or may have any information on those responsible to come forward to them, either at Enniscorthy Garda Station or on the Garda Confidential Line on 1800 666111.
This is not the first incident of this nature to have taken place in the area in recent weeks. Just last month, Boolavogue native Aileen Dempsey described how a fake Garda car attempted to run her off the road on two separate occasions when she refused to pull in on her way to Enniscorthy. This followed an attack on a woman outside Wexford town on February 10th which saw her robbed and beaten after pulling in for one of these fake garda cars.
Gardaí have said that they are doing everything they can to track down those responsible and have urged people to be aware of their own personal security when travelling the roads around Wexford. They have also advised people to ask Gardaí for their names and identification, which they are obligated to provide.
