Flags are out on Castle Street as Enniscorthy prepares for Monday’s 1916 commemoration events.

Enniscorthy has completed preparations for Easter Monday’s 1916 Rising centenary programme, the streets having been cleaned, windows decorated for the historic event and buildingsĀ are festooned with flags.

An estimated 10,000 people are expected to visit the town on Monday where the commemoration commences with a Celebration of Mass at St Aidan’s Cathedral.

This will be followed by a parade through the town to Abbey Square and hundreds of walkers and cyclists will arrive from Bunclody, Gorey, Kilmuckridge, Wexford and New Ross as part of the ‘backroads to the rising’ project.

The State Ceremony commences at 12.30 pm and will conclude at 2.30 pm with a 1916 battle re-enactment in Abbey Square and the Promenade Festival.

A special traffic plan will be in operation with park and ride facilities on the approach roads to the town.

Full coverage of the commemoration will feature in next week’s Echo Group of Newspapers in the shops early on Tuesday morning.
