Being great lovers of football, we frequently defend the game when rugby fans and others slate it for the diving and faking that goes on.

But then a video like this comes along and we have no defence to offer.

Belgian goalie Glenn Verbauwhede plays for Maritzburg United in the South African Premier League.

While playing against the Golden Arrows recently Verbauwhede, despite the fact that his team were winning, pulled off one of the most outrageous pieces of fakery we’ve ever seen.

He encouraged an opposition player to run in for the ball, but then picked it up and dived straight at the oncoming player’s legs.

To make it worse, his embarrassing performance actually persuaded the referee to issue his opponent with a yellow card.
