Alex Ferguson was famous for his plain speaking during his tenure as Manchester United manager - and he remains forthright in retirement.

Ferguson met Willett afterwards and told his fellow Briton that he had a sizeable bet on Spieth to win.

“I had £8000 on Spieth to win,” Ferguson said. “I’m so delighted, honestly.

“Happy to throw it away!”

Ferguson’s honesty may have been linked to an afternoon sampling the refreshments - he appeared merry and chatty while being interviewed with James Nesbitt.
