The head of Sport Ireland has said that organisers of mixed martial arts events here have a responsibility to ensure fighters are safe.

Former Olympian John Treacy is calling for a review to determine whether or not the sport should be banned in Ireland.

His comments follow the death of fighter João Carvalho on Monday.

The Organisation is set to begin discussions with the Department of Sport this week – however it will not be involved in investigation into Mr Carvalho’s death, as it “does not recognise MMA in any form”.

Mr Treacy says it is time to be realistic about the dangers MMA poses.

“There is a high degree of danger and risk involved in this sport,” he said.

“They don’t call it ‘extreme’ for no reason.

“All of those types of issues need to be examined and looked at very carefully.

“I think it’s time now to take stock and look and examine this sport and where it is in Ireland.”
