A bad-tempered Dublin derby had to be held-up in the closing stages due to fan clashes.

Riot police had to be brought in to control the crowd after rival fans of Shamrock Rovers and Bohemians ran onto the pitch to confront each other at Dalymount Park.

On the pitch, Rovers thrashed arch-rivals Bohemians 4-0.

A brace from Brandon Miele as well as goals from Gary McCabe and Gavin Brennan gave the Hoops a convincing win that helps them to keep pace with the other title contenders.

Elsewhere tonight, Dundalk have moved clear at the top of the table after a Ronan Finn’s penalty was enough to give them a 1-0 win over Sligo Rovers at Oriel Park.

Conan Byrne scored twice for St Pat’s as they beat 10-man Wexford Youths 4-0 at Richmond Park. Mark Timlin and Christy Fagan got the other goals.

Cork City twice battled back to draw 2-2 against their hosts Galway United.

Stephen Dooley pegged back Galway after Vinny Faherty’s fourth-minute opener, but Gary Shanahan returned the hosts to the lead.

However a 67th-minute equaliser from Eoghan O’Connell gave Cork a share of the spoils.

In the late kick-off, Finn Harps beat Bray Wanderers 1-0 at Finn Park, thanks to an early David Scully goal.

In the First Division, Shelbourne hammered Waterford United 4-1 at the RSC while UCD and Drogheda United played-out a 2-2 draw in Belfield.
