Major inequalities facing Irish sports women will be discussed today as former Tanaiste Mary Harney will address the annual “Women in Media” conference.

This years event is taking place in Ballybunion in Co Kerry.

Sharon Hutchinson created the website – sportswomen.ie after becoming frustrated with the small amount of coverage given to women’s sport in Ireland.

She believes the media is a key influencer when it comes to keeping Irish girls interested in sport: “I still believe we have a long way to go yet.

“For me, my focus is coverage of women’s sport in the media and I still feel it is running at a very low level.

“I would say it is about 7-8% if you open up the sports pages or if you go to the online media sports sections it is still very much dominated by men.”
