The Dáil’s new Committee on Housing and Homelessness meets for the first time today, with a mission to propose new ways of tackling the crisis.
The cross-party committee has been charged with presenting an interim report in a matter of days, as well as a final report by June.
It will hear evidence from people affected by the crisis and those working in the sector.
Committee member Eoin Ó Broin, of Sinn Féin, has said it is important for TDs to remember the human toll of the crisis.
“Given the fact that there are almost 2,000 children who will tonight spend the night in emergency accommodation, I think it’s incumbent on all of us who have been elected to roll up our sleeves and get working on trying to tackle these problems,” said Ó Broin.
