The world has woken up to a sea of purple today in honour of music legend Prince, who died yesterday at the age of 57.

Prince was found unresponsive inside his Paisley Park estate in Minnesota, and was later pronounced dead.

Paying tribute to one of his best-known albums Purple Rain, major cities all over the world have been lighting up accordingly.

NASA also tweeted this picture of a purple nebula in honour of the singer while the New Yorker dedicated their entire front cover.

Social media platform Snapchat also released a Purple Rain filter as a subtle nod to the artist.

The cast of Broadway musical The Color Purple expressed their love for the late icon with a special tribute following the curtain call.

Jennifer Hudson and Cynthia Erivo led a powerful rendition of Purple Rain with their co-stars and invited the audience to join in for the final chorus.
